*Paula Patton stars in a new film that dramatizes what happens when our obsession with social media and technology goes too far.

“Disconnect,” opening this Friday from director Henry Alex Rubin, is described in its tagline as “a drama centered on a group of people searching for human connections in today’s wired world.”

Patton’s character Cindy and her husband Derek (Alexander Skarsgård) are drawn into a volatile situation when their secrets are exposed online. The couple has recently lost their child, and things get worse after their identities are stolen online.

When it comes to her own relationship with social media, the actress and wife of singer Robin Thicke says she tries hard not to let her smart phone intrude on her daily activities.

“I try to strike a balance,” said Patton, 37, during a recent press conference for the film. “Sometimes you have to respond to something, but often times I really like to hide it deep down in my purse because I feel that emails and texts can just ruin your day. Have you ever been out with somebody and you’re having a great time, and they look down [at their phone] and they’re like, ‘Oh my God?’ That element of surprise, I try to leave it out of my life because it gives me anxiety.”

Below, Patton reveals what unfortunate texting practice also gives her anxiety. It’s a dangerous habit she admits to having done regularly in the past.

“Disconnect,” also starring Jason Bateman, Hope Davis, Max Thieriot and Frank Grillo, opens in theaters on April 12. Watch the trailer below.
